Between 2017 and 2018 a delegation of the Indigenous Government Council (CIG) travelled across Mexico to organize a network of indigenous social movements. María de Jesús Patricio Martínez, an indigenous Nahua woman, was elected to be the spokeswoman of the National Indigenous Congress (CNI), a decision backed by the National Liberation Zapatista Army (EZLN).
María de Jesús, better known as "Marichuy", would be proposed as candidate for Mexico's presidency. But in order to do so, the movement would have to gather the signatures of 866,593 registered voters, a requirement established by the National Electoral Institute (INE) for independent candidates.
At the end of the process, the electoral authorities recognized that the other independent presidential candidates presented hundreds of thousands of false signatures. But even so, they were included in the ballots. Marichuy, on the other side, registered only 281,955 signatures, of which 94.5% were validated by the authorities.

Entre el 2017 y el 2018, una representación del Concejo Indígena de Gobierno (CIG) recorrió México para organizar una red de movimientos sociales indígenas. María de Jesús Patricio Martínez, una mujer indígena nahua, fue seleccionada para ser vocera por el Congreso Nacional Indígena (CNI), decisión respaldada por el Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN).
El pretexto era lanzar a ‘Marichuy’, la vocera, como candidata a la presidencia de México. Para lograrlo, tendría que reunir 866.593 firmas de votantes registrados, requisito establecido por el Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) para los candidatos independientes que quisieran estar en la boleta electoral.
Al final, las autoridades electorales reconocieron que los demás candidatos independientes a la presidencia presentaron cientos de miles de registros falsos y aun así quedaron en la boleta. La candidatura de Marichuy, por otro lado, recibió sólo 281,955 registros, de los cuales el 94.5% fueron validados por el INE.
